What JPG to PNG actually changes

JPG and PNG solve different problems. JPEG is designed for compact photographic images and normally uses lossy compression, while PNG stores the converted pixels losslessly and can support transparency. Converting an existing JPG to PNG stops another JPEG-style re-encode at export, but it cannot recreate detail that was already discarded by the original JPEG.

Input: .jpg,.jpegOutput: image/pngUp to 50 files where supported

Best uses for this conversion

  • Moving a JPEG into an editing or design workflow that specifically requires PNG.
  • Saving screenshots, diagrams or text-heavy images in a format that handles sharp edges well after conversion.
  • Creating a PNG copy before further edits when repeated JPEG re-saving would be undesirable.

Quality, transparency and compatibility

  • The output may be larger than the JPG because PNG is lossless for the pixels it receives.
  • A white or colored JPG background remains part of the image; format conversion alone does not remove it.
  • JPEG compression artifacts already visible in the source will also be present in the PNG.

How to get a reliable PNG result

These steps are specific to JPG to PNG. Keep the original file until you have tested the converted output in its final destination.

  1. 1

Choose the original .jpg or .jpeg file rather than a renamed copy of another format.

  2. 2

Inspect the source at normal size so you know whether blur, blockiness or color banding is already present.

  3. 3

Run the conversion and keep the tab open until the PNG is ready.

  4. 4

Open the PNG and compare important text, edges and colors with the JPG.

  5. 5

Check the new file size before using it on a website or upload form with a strict limit.

  6. 6

Use a background-removal tool separately if you actually need transparent pixels.

Common questions

JPG to PNG FAQ

Will JPG to PNG make the background transparent?

No. PNG can store transparency, but converting a JPG does not know which visible pixels should be removed.

Does PNG improve the quality of a low-quality JPG?

No. The PNG preserves the pixels produced from the JPG, but lost JPEG detail cannot be reconstructed by a format change.

Why can the PNG be bigger than the JPG?

PNG uses lossless compression, while JPEG is optimized for smaller photographic files with lossy compression.
