How to Compress Images for Government and Exam Portals
Different recruitment, exam and application portals use different file-size, dimension and format limits. Always read the current portal instructions first, then compress only as much as needed to meet them.
Check all three requirements
Portals can validate file size, pixel dimensions and file format separately. A 40 KB image may still be rejected if the dimensions or format are wrong. Write down every requirement shown on the target portal before editing.
File size
Example: a portal may specify a minimum and maximum KB range.
Dimensions
The portal may require exact width and height or an aspect ratio.
Format
JPEG/JPG, PNG or another format may be required explicitly.
Compress gradually
Start with a moderate quality setting and check the result. If the file is still too large, reduce quality further or resize the image only when the portal allows it. Signatures and text-heavy scans can become hard to read if compressed too aggressively.
Do not use a generic “20 KB rule”
There is no single file-size limit used by every government or exam portal. Use the exact limit displayed for the specific application you are submitting.
Final check
Open the compressed file, zoom in, confirm the face or signature is readable, check the dimensions and file size, and upload only after the result matches the portal instructions.

Add up to 50 images, choose a compression level and check the resulting file size before uploading to the destination portal.
